Kara Sanchez (go check her out, seriously!) is by far one of my favorite hair and makeup artists in Austin! She is just so genuine, easy to talk to and passionate about her job. I religiously look at her Instagram to see the newest and latest in makeup (and just to see what she is up to)! When she agreed to do an interview with me, I was beyond excited! As a girl who has never worn much makeup (mostly because of lack of knowledge), I learned a lot from this interview. Also, after chatting with her (also after following her Instagram for so long), I have made the decision to do a complete makeup overhaul! She does this “makeup bag makeover” where she goes through the makeup you have and shows you how to create your best look from what you already own. She also gives product recommendations, notes and photos! This interview focuses on her makeup expertise…
KY: Where do you get your inspiration from?
KS: Makeup artists such as Lisa Eldridge and Charlotte Tilbury. Also, looks from the red carpet!
KY: How long have you been a makeup artist and how did you get your start in the industry?
KS: I did the makeup for a wedding when I was in high-school and got “bit by the bug”! I really enjoyed being there that day and the instant gratification. Seeing someone who can’t stop looking at themselves in the mirror.
KY: What do you love most about makeup?
KS: I feel like makeup is magical. It can change how you feel about yourself in 20 mins. Whether that’s using 1 or 2 products to cover something you are self conscious about or a complete makeover, I love the confidence it gives. Every single woman has at least 2 things about their face that they don’t realize is a gold mine; show them how to maximize that and it makes a world of a difference.
KY: If you weren’t a makeup artist, what else would you do?
KS: Interior designer!
KY: What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women?
KS: Know your best feature, and know how to maximize it (IE If you don’t like your mouth, don’t wear red lipstick)
KY: What products do you think should be a staple in every woman’s makeup wardrobe?
KS: A really good foundation and an excellent brow pencil
KY: What’s your all time favorite makeup brand and product?
KS: Brand– Nars; Product–Brow Wiz by Anastasia
KY: How do you prepare different skin types before applying makeup?
KS: Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate–then moisturize and prime
The two steps I modify for each client in preparation for makeup are the moisturizer and primer combination. Choosing the right ones make all the difference in how the makeup wears. The number one thing women forget to do before getting their makeup done is EXFOLIATE! Makeup will always look best on freshly exfoliated skin
KY: Tell me about two season makeup trends
KS: A lot more glowy skin in makeup and a lot less matte; Full brows
A huge thank you to Kara for her time and expertise!!!
